Understanding the Basic DJ Equipment Setup
In the past, the necessary equipment that disc jockeys or DJs use to create unique blends of music for pubs and clubs is generally not available to the general population. Later on, professional DJ equipment soon became in demand among many music enthusiasts especially in the 1980s and 1990s when hip-hop and rave became popular. This has allowed many people to create their own DJ music remixes and distribute them at a faster rate.
The basic DJ equipment setup typically involves two turntables, two compact disc (CD) players, or a combination of both. These two units are usually referred to as Channel 1 and 2, and serve as the DJs sources of music to mix and blend in any way he wants. Through a connector-sometimes called a phono connector-and stereo cables, the two turntables are connected to the DJ mixer.
The mixer is the equipment where the DJ can control volume, and o it generally has four switches. One controller is the "crossfader," which is typically the horizontal bar and is used to switch the volume between the two turntable or CD players. Each turntable or CD player has assigned "upfader" controls in the mixer that are generally the vertical bars. Most mixers have a channel "gain," also known as "trim," that also controls a particular channel's volume. Lastly, the master control generally controls the total volume output.
The mixer is then connected to an amplifier or an amplifier rack, which are then attached to the speakers to produce the great exciting dance music throughout the entire party floor. A DJ has to also know how to operate the amp rack's equaliser to produce the appropriate and desired quality of music.
