Understanding the Entertainment Industry
The entertainment industry is a massive one, encompassing radio, television, film and theatre, among others. It may also pertain to the show business or show biz, where key players are those that supply all sorts of entertainment to the audience.
The entire industry can be sub-divided into three: live entertainment, modern-day mass media entertainment, and electronic entertainment. Under live entertainment are circus, theatre, comedy, sports, amusement rides, funfairs and concerts; under mass media are cinemas, fashion industry, discotheques, and the Internet. Meanwhile, electronic entertainment comes in the form of video games and mobile messaging.
In the United Kingdom, legislation has been in place to control and manage the national entertainment industry. In particular, health and safety is of major concern for the government with regards to various sub-sectors. In the film, television and theatre production, several rules must be followed concerning, among others, the use of smoke and vapour effects, use of animals, crowd management, electrical safety, and hazardous production activities like stunts and fights. In the case of fairground rides and amusement devices, they must observe safe practices, assess ride risks, and perform inspection. Entities that provide outdoor adventure activities are likewise supervised so they ensure the health and safety of everyone, particularly those that are into carting, skiing, rock climbing, diving, etc. Railways, engines and vehicles engaged in such activities must also ensure utmost safety. In the same manner, zoos and pools must also manage health and safety all the time.
